Seven Waves Movement System and Bellydance Technique
We will start with “Seven Waves,” a juicy, nourishing and muscle conditioning warm up that also helps to connect the breath, free the joints and enliven the nervous system, thereby accessing our innate body intelligence. By finding our way to what Roula calls a “loving and neutral” relationship to gravity, we activate our core, work more deeply with less effort, and access the essential quality of movement that makes bellydance so compelling and mesmerizing. In working our bellydance technique, we will concentrate on clean hip work both sharp and fluid, luscious shimmies, and graceful, gliding traveling steps. We will also spend some time on hands and arms and how they relate to the waves. And, we will have a very good time doing it!
2:30 – 3:00 p.m.
3:00 – 5:00 p.m.
Incorporating what we have explored in the first half of the workshop, we will open our ears and our hearts to the “Wave” of sound. We will explore both rhythm and melody, using clapping, finger cymbals and voice. Roula will introduce her comprehensive method for the zylls/saghat, and teach a short and fun dance combination with the cymbals. Notes will be provided. We will also spend some time at the end of the workshop opening our voices to produce some simple melodies in 3 different maqams/modes/scales of Arabic music. Think of this as a very delicious “Om” at the end of a satisfying yoga class.
