10:00 - 12:00 Zills with Bobbie - YES YOU CAN!
... In the 1970s era of what has come to be known as American Cabaret Style belly dance, you could not consider yourself a competent dancer if you did not know how to play zills.
With the rising popularity of Egyptian Style belly dance in more recent years, zill playing is becoming a lost art.
Bobbie will help make this wonderful percussion instrument less intimidating by teaching some basic zill skills: sounds, patterns (beyond the basic triple) and rhythms and get you moving and playing at the same time!
12:00 - 1:00 LUNCH
1:00 - 3:00 Sassy, Hard Hitting and Slinky Combos with Luciterra's Laura Albert, Gillian Cofsky and Naomi Gallagher
In this 2-hour workshop, learn combos from Luciterra's original choreography, in their signature sassy, hard-hitting, and slinky style!
Complete with a thorough warm-up and posture check, isolations and layering drills, and finally a detailed breakdown to put it all together into combos from Luciterra original performance choreography!
This workshop will be co-taught by Laura, Gillian, and Naomi, giving you the added benefit of three different teaching styles, and two additional instructors offering feedback and suggestions!
SUNDAY 9th 2011
Studio Opens: 10:30
11:00 - 1:00 Costuming Your Goddess Self - Head to Toe with Candace and Rayna - Harmony BellyDance Company
Costuming Your Goddess Self
Have you always wondered how to go about creating and designing a new costume? Ever wondered what looks best on you and your body type, what colors to use and how textures can really accent your finished product? Have you ever seen another dancer or performer and wonder how do they do their hair and makeup and just loved what they’ve done but have no idea how to make it happen for you?
Throughout this workshop we will go over ideas and ways to create and design your own costumes. Finding your way into innovative and unique costumes and pieces that will be your very own creations and not that of having to ‘borrow or take’ from others. We will go over styles and designs that will be better suited for your body type and comfort zones and finding ‘Your’ most dynamic appearances for on stage performing.
The secondary topic we will focus on is your stage make-up, removing your daytime life out of your performance appearance and how you may feel about makeup in general. It is our soul hope and desire to have you jump on board with how Important we believe your stage presence is, the dynamic power that the proper stage makeup can have on your entire performance and whether or not you instantly were able to captivate your audience on their first glimpse of ‘You’!
There will be a brief discussion and go through on hair ~ Up or Down, Halfway there, To feather, flower, jewel or nothing at all.
Take time to start a collection and find things that inspire You – Pictures (not necessarily of bellydancers), fabrics, items of interest, colors, textures, etc. Bring your makeup and hair accessories that you own and have maybe never used because you just don’t know what to do with them
~ Please keep in mind that for the costuming portion of this workshop it will be more generally focused into the world of fusion and tribal fusion belly dance (as this is where my professional career lies) and for those interested in creating and designing their own unique style. It will however, also be going over styles, body types, colors, etc that can easily translate into all styles of dance. The makeup portion will be for ALL performers and not segregated to any one style.
1:00 - 1:30 ** Short Lunch due to Thanksgiving Weekend Dinners
1:30 - 3:30 Khaleegy with Laura Filipovic
Khaleegy is a folkloric dance from the Persian Gulf region, also referred to as Saudi dance or Raks Nasha'at ('hair dance'). While it is not bellydance, it is often put under the larger umbrella of 'Middle Eastern dance' and many dancers will incorporate Khaleegy steps and movements into their repertoire. Most commonly recognized for the elaborate beaded gowns worn when performed (thobe nasha'al) and various hair tosses, this dance is distinctly feminine, joyous and graceful.
The workshop will focus on learning a little bit of the culture of the dance, followed by the basic steps and movements and will end with a short choreography. Please bring your thobe if you have one, otherwise bring a veil to use in its place.
